In India, DRI (also called sponge iron) is mainly used as a substitute of steel scrap in production of steel in electric arc furnace and induction furnace route. When you make DRI through gas based methods, it becomes one of the environment friendly method of making steel. DRI also have higher iron (Fe) content thus making it the preferred raw material for making alloy and special steels for vital sectors like automobile, defence, aviation, space etc. In India, – Essar Steel, JSPL, JSW Ispat, Welspun Maxsteel, TSIL, Monnet Ispat, Rungta Mines, Godavari Power & Ispat, etc., are the larger players who make DRI.
India is the largest DRI producer in the world for last 9 consecutive years. This trend likely to continue in India, thanks to Essar Steel, which is also the largest gas based and coal based DRI producer in the world.
