TML was set up as a joint venture between Tata Steel Limited (TSL) and WBIDC (West Bengal Industrial Development Corporation) in 1991 to manufacture pig iron at its plant at Kharagpur, West Bengal. It has two plants at present, one located at Kharagpur (West Bengal) and the other at Redi (Maharashtra), which was acquired in January 2006. TML belongs to the Tata group of companies with Tata Steel Ltd indirectly owning 50.04% of the equity capital of the company. However, as per a recent declaration to the stock exchanges, the company along with its subsidiary Tata Metaliks Kubota Pipes Limited (TMKPL) is proposed to be merged with TSL with effect from April 1, 2013.
