Steel is a century old industry in India. The primary steel production in India is dominated by large players like SAIL, Tata Steel, JSW and Jindal. The secondary production sector involves small units focused on the production of value-added products such as cold rolled coils, galvanised coils, angles, columns, beams and other re-rollers, and sponge iron units.
Both sectors cater to different market segments. The industry is poised for a big jump, with large capacity expansion programme of steel majors are nearing completion taking Indian steel capacity from 89.0 million tpa to 114 million tpa. India is set to become the second largest producer in the world.
Government of India is aiming at rejuvenating the steel sector and removing the hurdles in steel production by scaling up production to 300 MT by 2025
